Trim Your Wicks ✂️ - It’s a Non-Negotiable
Every candle maker will tell you… TRIM YOUR WICKS.
It will ring true in your ears the same way you were told to eat all your vegetables or clean your room. It’s a non-negotiable when owning a candle. Apart from the obvious aesthetic reasons, it’s a requirement to ensure you are burning your candle safely.
So why is this important?
While you are burning your candle, the wick turns black. Depending on how long you burn for, you may experience some mushrooming of the wick which means that the top of the wick splits into a few pieces and looks similar to a mushroom (actually in my opinion it looks more like a broccoli 🥦 but the experts and rest of the candle world call it a mushroom so we’ll go with that!).
If you do not cut this off prior to your next burn, your candle will run hotter than it should, emitting a black smoke and burning down faster than it needs to. This means that you run the risk of damaging surfaces and your TOD finishing sooner than you’d like! You may also experience less fragrance notes and the top of the candle may turn black.
So how do i prevent this?
You guessed it… you must trim those wicks!
Before you commence each burn, remove the top of the black wick caused from the prior burn. We recommend cutting the wick down to approx 4mm.
What can I trim my wick with?
We recommend using our TOD Wick Trimmers. These provide easy access to the depth of the candle on an angle that regular scissors cannot get to. If you don’t have a Wick Trimmer and want one, they can be purchased here. And while you wait for your order to arrive, you can absolutely use scissors or a tissue.
And whatever you do… remember to always TYW (Trim Your Wick).
